What the heck is a zine?

A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a self-published, handmade work of original or appropriated texts and images. A zine can be hard to define because there aren’t a ton of rules. They originate from 1930’s sci-fi fandom and, throughout the years, have been popular in informal, underground, or niche creative communities. Zines have a long history of acting as a medium that frames social and political conversation.

Who decides which artists are selected?

Each edition, we put together a Selection Committee of 6-10 community leaders across fields, who are responsible for voting on applications. Averaged votes are used to help the printed team narrow down applications.

Will my entry be credited?

Yes, all selected submissions will be credited in the zine with the creator’s information. Selected applicants will be added to the website with their information, so members of the community can find their work.

Can I apply with others as a group or collective?

Yes, we encourage submissions of collective work.

Why do I have to apply?

Because of the overwhelming amount of creative and talented people and the limited amount of resources in creating the zine, size restrictions require us to narrow things down.

I don’t make zines, can I apply?

If you can imagine it translated onto a 2D piece of paper, it applies. Writers, bakers, painters, illustrators, models, actors, and every other form of creativity you can think of is welcome! Have a recipe you created? A piece of music you wrote? Something only a QR code could represent? Apply!

When can I purchase the zine?

Editions are usually completed in the Spring around April - May. You can find editions for sale at printedzine.com/shop

Is there an application submission fee?

It is totally free to apply! :)

I’m under 18 years of age, can I apply?

Because we are not imposing restrictions on what content may be submitted, we are not currently accepting applications from those under the age of 18.

I’m not located in Louisville/Kentucky, can I apply?

You sure can! We are based in Louisville but accept submissions from anywhere and everywhere.

Will I be paid for contributing?

All profits made through zine sales are split evenly and distributed amongst participating creators.

Are there any restrictions on what work can be submitted?

There are no restrictions on what may be submitted. Literally none, other than being 18+.

How/when will I receive an application response?

Submissions close at Midnight January 1st, 2024. Applicants can expect to hear back via email no later than February 29th, 2024.

Will I retain ownership and copyright of work I submit?

Yup! Printed will not use your work for any future projects without explicit permission from you.
